Champions League Final 2013, Bayern Munich vs. Borussia Dortmund: The magic of the details

Champions League's final, season 2012-13, was the perfect summary to the best soccer that we saw in this season. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund arrived to Wembley with impressive records. The team from Munich had gotten the first place in the Germany soccer tournament and played the final of the last Champions League season against Chelsea, loosing in a weird game. Whilst, Borussia Dortmund had won the season 2010-11 and 2011-12 in Germany local tournament, being second in this current season behind from Bayern Munich.

From the first minute, the game showed the best of both teams. On one side, Borussia showed why it is one of the best team in Europe: its exceptional play in block. On the other side, Bayern demonstrated why it is a mature team that understands the game so good, playing long ball in the exact moment of the game, pressuring rivals when is just and necessary, being Javi Martinez its best expression in the final, and generating quick transitions with its “alas tornantes”: Robben and Ribery.

                Borussia dominated the game exactly 27 minutes. In this period, it generated at least three opportunities to score. The control on the game was total, in the three zones of the field: defense, midfielder, and attack. Gundokan, with its great sense of the game, was the key player in that moment of the game. He distributed balls and managed the quick transitions to attack on Bayern' flanks. Along with Blaszczykowski and Grosskreutz, Gundokan dominated completely the game. Without doubts the Germany midfielder is one of the closer player to Xavi Hernandez, a exceptional player.

               From the minute 28, Bayern Munich pressured on the game. Robben and Ribery extended and deepened the field, as well as Muller was moving more among the two Borussia' center defenders. As a result Mandzukic had more spaces to combine in the front of Borussia's eighteen zone. In this phase of the game emerged one of the qualities of Bayer Munich: its maturity and tactical work. In just five minutes, the Bavarian team generated three corners and won the same amount of corners, creating good opportunities to score. The corners went to the penalty point, which is impressive if we look in the size of players trying to win the ball inside the eighteen zone. Both of them had had the same problems in Madrid playing against Real Madrid, specially Hummels, an irregular central defender.

              However, in this final, the small details were the most important factor to win. In this dimension of the game Bayern Munich won in all sense. In a game where the forces were tied, the small details emerged, almost invisible to the eyes of fans, and defined the game. The second goal is the best example of this dimension. The play starts in a foul. Between Ribery and Boateng, who serves the call, there is almost 60 mts. The service of Boateng goes to the center of the detail: the irregularity of Hummels and Sabotic. Ribery runs diagonally, being followed by Piszczek, but the French player wins the ball and keep playing to Robben, who seeing the goalkeeper defines coldly, a play of manual. La final de la Champions League 2012-13 fue el mejor resumen del mejor futbol que vimos de Europa en su sesion 2012-2013. Llegaron a Wembley, los hinchas de los equipos finalistas y sus equipos, el Borussia Dortmund y el Bayern Munich. El primero de ellos dos veces campeon de la bundesliga, temporadas 2010-2011 y 2011-12, y segundo en la temporada 2012-2013. El otro equipo, finalista en champions league el ano pasado y campeon de la bundesliga, temporada 2012-2013, con una amplia ventaja sobre su mas cercano competidor, vaya el Borussia Dortmund.

               Las acciones fueron desde el primer minuto el claro reflejo de ambos equipos. Por un lado, el mejor futbol de bloque de la temporada 2012-2013 en Europa, aquel futbol del Borussia Dortmund. Por el otro lado, la presencia de un equipo maduro, que administra el uso del tiempo a la perfeccion, con trazos largos cuando este amerita, con el achique sobre el rival cuando es justo y necesario, la transicion rapida por los costados con Ribery, Kross o Robben, el heroe de la final, no tanto por el futbol, sino por la deuda impaga desde la final de Munich el 2012. Borussia domino exactamente 27 minutos del primer tiempo, en los cuales conto con al menos tres oportunidades de gol. El dominio fue total, defensa, medios y delantera. Sin embargo no pudo finiquitar el partido. Gundokan fue el jugador clave en aquel periodo con su extraordianrio sentido del juego y el tiempo, lo mas cercano a los mejor de la excepcionalidad llamada Xavi Hernandez. Apoyado por sus dos escoltas, Blaszczykowski y Grosskreutz, domino con amplitud el juego.

                  A partir del minuto 27, el Bayern apreto. Robben y Rivery extendieron el campo, lo ampliaron, como asi tambien Muller se movio mas. El resultado de estos movimientos fue la separacion de los centrales del Borussia. Mandzukic se empezo a ver muy libre y en menos de cinco minutos provocaron tres corners. Aparecio entonces la madurez del Bayern Munich como equipo y en tres pelotas paradas, corners, ganaron las tres y fueron cuasi-goles. En el primer tiempo hubieron 4 corners, tres los gano inapelablemnte el Bayern, corners que fueron al punto penal, algo notable viendo el tamano de los players. Sin duda algo para estudiar, especialmente los movimientos que denotan el timing entre el salto y su coordinacion con el servidor, como asi tambien las posiciones para formar una linea de tres hombres para ganar en el primer o segundo palo, o con el rematador central. Le hicieron lo mismo al pobre Bracelona al que le ganaron metiendole pelotas altas al segundo palo. Que lo cuente Alexis o Alves.

             El segundo tiempo fue mas para el Bayern quien lo termino ganando y ganando por ende la final. El Borussia intento hacer lo mismo que en la primera etapa, pero JH no se dejo soreprnder. El entrenador aleman adelanto a Javi Martinez para estar mas cerca de Gundokan y le puso mas presion a los externos del BD, logrando desocnectar a Lewandowsky, quien habia sido fundamental para descargar en el primer tiempo. Al mismo tiempo comenzo a presionar mucho a la defensa del BD . Dos hechos fueron determinantes. Primero, Robben y Ribery comenzaron a ganar sus duelos con los laterales, Schmelzer y Piszczek, y segundo los balonazos largos para Muller y Mandzukic fueron letales para la dupla de centrales Hummels y Subotic. Ambos centrales ya habian tenido problemas serios ante el Real Madrid bajo el mismo formato, especialmente Hummels, un central irregular.

            Sin embargo, lo mas importante, es que la mejor final en los utimos anos se gano por los detalles. Ante fuerzas que se mostraron parejas emergieron los pequenos momentos y las pequenas acciones, casi imperceptibles para el ojo escrutador del hincha, las que definieron el partido. Aqui llamo la atencion sobre la jugada del segundo gol del Bayern. La jugada empieza desde un foul, hay unos 60 metros entre el punto de recepcion de Ribery y el lanzamiento de Boateng. La jugada va al centro del detalle: la irregularidad de Hummels y Sabotic. Rivery corre en diagonal tambien seguido de Piszczek a quien ya le ha ganado, recibe y la jugada continua de memoria con Robben, la definicion, viendo los movimientos del arquero, algo de manual. Donde estaban Muller y Mandzukic, jeee. Gran trabajo tecnico parta desplazar a la irregularidad: los centrales del BD. Para esta conclusion, para este detalle, es necesaria la profundidad del entrenamiento, el hablar todos los dias, el conocer al rival, aqui no solo esta el talento en juego, sino una forma de ensenar el futbol, el gran detalle que ha sellado la carrera de JH, imperceptible muchas veces para el comun de los hinchas, pero ciertamente lo que define finales como las que vimos ayer.
